Premier Smith,

The Hon. Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health,

The Hon. Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas

Calgary is scheduled to resume water fluoridation at 0.7 mg/L in Q1 2025. This decision is informed by Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services (AHS), which publicly endorse community water fluoridation as a safe and effective measure for preventing tooth decay. According to AHS’s website, “Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services recognize that community water fluoridation effectively prevents tooth decay, especially among people who are most vulnerable. It offers significant benefits with very low risk and reaches all residents who are connected to a municipal water supply. Therefore, Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services endorse community water fluoridation as a foundational public health measure to prevent tooth decay and improve oral health.”  https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/oh/Page5455.aspx

However, in a landmark decision dated September 24, 2024, the U.S. District Court in Food & Water Watch v. U.S. EPA concluded that water fluoridation at 0.7 mg/L poses an "unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment." As a concerned Calgary citizen who does not consent to this treatment, I urge you to revoke Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services' endorsement of community water fluoridation.

The court’s Findings of Fact provides compelling evidence that water fluoridation leads to reduced IQ in children and brittle bones in seniors . The ruling explicitly states, “Reduced IQ poses serious harm. Studies have linked IQ decrements of even one or two points to reduced educational attainment, employment status, productivity, and earned wages.” These harms far outweigh the purported benefits of water fluoridation in reducing childhood cavities, which can be addressed through alternative means, including the new Federal Dental Program.

There are also new studies, such as the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) meta-analysis of 74 epidemiological studies, which confirm the link between children’s IQ and fluoride exposure. The study, conducted by scientists from the NIH’s National Toxicology Program (NTP) and published in JAMA Pediatrics, on January 6, 2025 found that the more fluoride pregnant women and young children are exposed to, the greater the decrease in a child’s IQ.

Unlike childhood cavities, reduced IQ is irreversible, significantly impacting children’s futures and lowering their life trajectories. Under the Alberta Bill of Rights, our Right not to be subject to medical treatment without the consent of that individual "are subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably and proportionately justified, based on evidence in a free and democratic Alberta." A comprehensive risk/benefit analysis of new evidence demonstrates that fluoridation does not meet this standard.

Time is of the essence, as Calgary plans to begin water fluoridation in Q1 2025. I respectfully request your immediate attention to this matter to safeguard the health, rights, and future of all Calgarians by revoking Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services' endorsement of community water fluoridation.

Thank you for your time and dedication to this critical issue. I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Call for an immediate moratorium on water fluoridation in Calgary
